DRUGS
- NSAIDS: Inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 activity and prostaglandin synthesis which in turn decreases inflammation and pain.
- Ex: ibuprofen (Advil), diclofenac (Voltaren), meloxicam (Mobic), celecoxib (Celebrex)
- Muscle Relaxants: decrease input to the alpha neurons in the CNS, which cause muscle contraction.
- Ex: cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), tizanidine (Zanaflex), methocarbamol (Robaxin), tizanidine (Zanaflex)
- Calcium Supplements: increase availability of calcium for absorption
- Ex: calcium carbonate (Tums), calcium citrate (Citracal)
- SERMS: reduce resorption of bone and decrease overall bone turnover
- Raloxifene (Evista)
- Oral Bisphosphates: inhibit bone resorption which leads to an indirect increase in bone mineral density
- Alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate(Actonel), ibandronate (Boniva), zoledronic acid (Reclast)
