Cholesterol: comes from diet, liver (where it is synthesized in body), and genetics
Factors for Hyperlipidemia:
- High fat intake, obesity, Type 2 DM
- Increased age, genetics
- Hypothyroidism, obstructive liver disease
- Drug induced: glucocorticoids, thiazides, diuretics, B-Blockers, protease inhibitors, sirolimus, cyclosporine, progestin, alcohol
LDL: high concentrations are associated with ↑risk of atherosclerotic disease.
Triglycerides: High concentrations are associated with ↑ risk of CAD
HDL: low concentrations are associated with coronary artery disease
TC = LDL + Trig/5 + HDL
Want the LDL LOW and HDL HIGH
All adults 20 years or older should be screened every 5 years or more often if family history of premature cardiovascular disease
RISK FACTORS FOR HYPERLIPIDEMIA:
- High fat intake, Obesity, Type 2 DM, Advanced age, Hypothyroidism, Obstructive liver disease, genetics
- DRUG INDUCED: glucocorticoids, THIAZIDES, DIURETICS, BETA BLOCKERS, protease inhibitors, sirolimus, cyclosporine, progestines, ALCOHOL
