Flagyl (Metronidazole)
- Flagyl (Metronidazole) Inhibits protein synthesis by breakage of DNA in the microorganism
- Covers: Gram+, Gram-, MRSA, VRE & Anaerobe coverage
- Does not cover the 3 P’s: No Pseudomonas, No Proteus, No Providencia
- Hepatically cleared
- Used for: anaerobic bacterial & protozoal infections, Trichomoniasis Bacterial Vaginosis abdominal infections, H.Pilori and Clostridium Difficile infections
- Flagyl can decrease the seizure threshold
- Patient must not drink ETOH (will cause a Disulfiram Reaction)
- Contraindicated in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and history of compromised hepatic dysfunction
- Side effects: Disulfiram Reaction, metallic taste, GI upset, seizures, peripheral neuropathy, black hairy tongue & can increase the INR (interferes with Coumadin)
- If allergic to Biaxin then you can substitute Flagyl for the treatment of H.Pilori
- Flagyl is also used in the treatment of STD’s
